Therapeutic Dining Program

The therapy department at Bala offers a Therapeutic Culinary Workshop. This program is a fun and socially engaging one that our Speech and Occupational Therapist run each week to increase cognition, speech and swallowing functions. This workshop also increases participation in IADL tasks, which include fine motor and upper extremity range of motion.


Each week, our residents and therapists collaborate to plan the meal of the week. This planning session targets cognitive and social goals, such as problem solving, planning skills, and attention to task. Later is the week, our residents return the kitchen to take turns chopping, stirring and pouring. Then, the team enjoy the meal together.

Benefits of the therapeutic culinary workshop include improvements in the following areas: safety awareness, problem solving, turn-taking, attention to task, planning, fine motor skills, IADL’s, functional reach, pragmatics, functional commands, expressive and receptive language skills.
